As if the author were a fourth kind of horse, the kind who could run down a track and rivet you with the gallops, the quick stops, all the while describing how a race could be run with such style.Even though Auerbach set the story amid heartbreak, heartache, unquenchable desire, AIDS and death, there is such a distinctive verve to the writing. Totally a delight to read!
Especially noteworthy: The voice of the heroine Lyssa, serving up trenchant observations of each consecutive social plight -- and this book isn't a dramedy of manners so much as an amazingly creative, bizarrely life-affirming, series of vignettes about the doomed. (They do not go quietly.)
It has been a long while since I read such a distinctive voice. One pretty random example can give you the idea.
Lyssa agrees to meet with her brother's girlfriend, "The mannequin."
"When we met she seemed completely unaware of the fact that there were no men in the bar. She was on a mission. She was completely focused on me. It was uncomfortable. I had the feeling she was trying to figure out if she should give me the card of the woman at Bergdorf's who sold her the soap she used."
Big themes, deep emotions, powerful dialogue, often laugh-out-loud funny ... brought to life through one convincingly human detail after another.
